We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Social Science Officer to join our Applied Science team on a temporary basis for 12 months.

The Role:

* In consultation with the Conservation Social Scientist, you'll help progress our understanding of social phenomena in zoo activities, through targeted, collaborative research and problem-solving, to ensure that our conservation and educational activities both in the zoo and globally achieve the greatest impact.

* To contribute to an effective and efficient social science service and research programme, to internal and external staff and clients, ensuring timely advice based on scientific data and / or sound scientific knowledge about social science.

* In consultation with the Conservation Social Scientist advise on how to maximize the human-animal experience in situ and ex situ to ensure the greatest conservation impact of Chester Zoo activities.

* In consultation with the Conservation Social Scientist provide professional support through training and consultancy to the society's Science and Animal Teams, Discovery and Learning, Field Programmes and Conservation Science teams both within and outside the zoo and promoting best practice in social science research.

* Participate in scientific conferences and professional associations and produce publications to ensure that our conservation and educational activities both in the zoo and globally achieve the greatest impact.

The successful candidate will have:

* A Masters degree in an applied conservation discipline or other field relevant to the social sciences in conservation (or equivalent research experience)
* A strong commitment to the value of applied research into social phenomena in zoo activities
* Proficiency in a wide range of social research methods
* Demonstrated ability to resource and deliver projects on time and to a high standard
* Ability to establish credibility and command respect of peers
* Ability to present information clearly and concisely in verbal presentations and written communications, including scientific writing and media communications to stakeholders at all levels
* Evidence of peer-reviewed publications or academic writing at an equivalent level
* Proven ability to work in and contribute to a team environment
* Knowledge and experience of zoo-based research, zoo operations is desirable

The salary for this role is £25,424.73 per annum based on 40 hours per week, worked Monday-Friday, with occasional evening / weekend work as required.
