We currently have an exciting opportunity for a highly commercial Data Protection Manager for a client of ours based in Bury St Edmunds. You will play a leading role in ensuring our client complies with its obligations under the General Data Protection Regulation from May 2018.

Alongside supporting the successful delivery of our clients programme to ensure the business is ready for the new data protection regime, the Data Protection Manager will keep up to date with changes to data protection legislation, provide advice and training to the business, monitor compliance with internal policies and procedures involving the processing of personal data, conduct data protection audits and prepare data protection reports.

Reporting to the Group Legal Counsel, this is a highly visible role which will involve significant stakeholder management to ensure the successful implementation of our client's data protection strategy. The Data Protection Manager will be involved in the delivery of function-specific training, collaborating with divisional and department heads to understand their needs and will act as lead in liaising with the Information Commissioners Office.

What the Data Protection Manager will be doing:

* Ensuring the successful implementation of the Company data protection policy
* Ensuring the timely review and development of the data protection policy; ensuring that our client's processes accurately reflect changes in legislation, practice & technology.
* Delivering relevant training across the business and ensuring ongoing awareness of the data protection policies.
* Identification of where personal data is being used and approval of the procedures surrounding how such data will be processed.
* Liaising with stakeholders responsible for risk mitigation and management and information security within the business.
* Providing expert advice and guidance on legislative and regulatory matters pertaining to data protection.
* Analysing and applying the various exemptions applicable to the processing of personal data.
* Advising and informing the business on the data protection impact assessment and monitoring performance against EU GDPR requirements.
* Providing advice and guidance in respect of data sharing projects.
* Managing the process in respect of data access requests.
* Ensuring our client has access to legislative updates; providing appropriate guidance related to data protection legislation.
* Completing, submitting and managing notifications to the supervisory authority as required under EU GDPR regulations.
* Implementing best practices related to the processing of personal data which apply to the business.

Skills & Experience required:

* Outstanding communication skills, stakeholder management and influencing abilities.
* A natural inclination towards detail with the ability to interpret and communicate complex data protection legislation and regulations.
* Able to problem-solve and provide robust solutions with a strategic mind-set.
* Demonstrates an interest in data protection and privacy issues.
* A good understanding of EU GDPR regulations and legislation or the willingness to undergo subject specific training.
* An ability to manage complex projects, engaging stakeholders at all levels to leverage buy-in.
* A keenness to collaborate with stakeholders cross-divisionally to facilitate roll-out of data protection processes and associated training, to include IT, Learning & Development, Marketing etc.
* An ability to deliver training and data protection roadshows to the wider business.
* An analytical, detail-focussed individual who is able to interpret relevant legislation and regulations.
* Demonstrates a strategic awareness, commerciality and the ability to take a pragmatic approach.
* Preferably a background in commercial or employment law, information security, procurement / purchasing or a similarly related field of study.
* Ability to work independently and autonomously; a true team player you will share knowledge and best practice to build team capabilities.
