My clients in Cambridgeshire are looking for a Research Scientist: Materials & Processes & Devices.
This role is commutable from Saffron Walden, Royston, Cambridge, Bedford, St. Neots, Huntingdon.
KEY ACTIVITIES:
- Design and implementation of experiments and development of novel devices, materials or processes that demonstrate technical feasibility of new project areas.
- Development and accurate measurement of robust testing and characterisation methods and the generation of data to support recommendations.
- Identification and development of creative solutions to solve technical problems encountered during the feasibility study of novel materials and devices.
- Evaluation of market needs and competition for target applications, proposing clear, well-argued recommendations as to whether a project should continue.
- Devise and communicate a robust work plan and progress towards achieving the target goals.
- Contribution to widening company IP portfolio.
- Contributing technology ideas to the team.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Excellent academic credentials are essential, including a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Materials Science or a Physical science discipline with a strong component of practical manipulation, processing and characterisation of functional materials into different forms and combinations.
- Experience of characterising a range of material systems by a variety of techniques is essential.
- Experience of working safely with a range of chemicals in a solid or solution-based form is essential.
- Experience of using materials in prototype application test structures to demonstrate desired functional properties is essential.
- Creative and inventive with a demonstrated aptitude for a broad range of experimental work and with experience of solving complex problems.
- Experience in planning and communicating a robust series of experiments to deliver the required targets
- Self-motivation and ability to operate independently in a laboratory environment.
- Excellent team-skills, with the ability to interface and effectively communicate across multiple scientific disciplines.
- An understanding of the time-critical demands of target-driven industrial research and of working with drive and passion to work towards critical deadlines.
- Experience of developing testing procedures, including writing experimental and data acquisition control programmes for new devices would be an advantage.
- Experience of identifying ideas suitable for filing patent applications and of supporting this process would be an advantage.
Salary c£32-35k per annum, flexible for the right candidate.
