Job Title: Health And Safety Advisor
Location:Eastbourne
Rate:£35K to £38K Per Year    Benefits: 10% bonus
Description: Operational Health and Safety Advisor

This role is key to the safe operation of our business. The Operational Health and Safety Adviser represents a ‘1st line’ control and is primarily focused on the safe occupation of our business premises, with additional ‘2nd line’ Health and Safety Management focused resource provided within our Risk department. The role holder is required to work closely and collaboratively with this resource to deliver a seamless service to our business.

To provide health and safety advice and support to the business and specifically for the Property Services Department, by auditing compliance against health and safety regulatory requirements and providing the Head of Department with the information required for higher level reporting, while supporting all members of the Property Services Team in the fulfilment of their duties in regards to health and safety compliance and the reduction of risk.

Accountabilities

* Carry out risk assessments and consider how risks could be reduced.
* Outline safe operational procedures which identify and take into account all relevant hazards and support Company Health and Safety and all associated Policy.
* Conduct regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
* Ensure working practices are safe and comply with legislation.
* Prepare health and safety strategies that reflect the needs of a growing business and proactively contribute to developing internal policy.
* Carry out initial accident investigation and report/escalate according to regulatory requirement and company policy.
* Line Manage DSE Assessor.
* Lead in-house training with managers and colleagues about health and safety issues and risks.
* Actively manage and facilitate Fire Warden, Incident Control, Emergency Response Team and First aid training to ensure sufficient numbers of competent trained Colleagues are available across the business.
* Maintain detailed, accessible records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements and track activity to ensure continuous improvement and active risk mitigation.
* Maintain detailed, accessible records of incidents and accidents and produce timely and appropriate statistics for managers.
* Stay up to date with new legislation and maintain a current working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that may affect the employer's industry.
* Maintain a robust network with fellow H&S professionals including attendance at Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) seminars.
* Produce timely and informative management reports, newsletters and bulletins that highlight and reinforce Health and Safety in the workplace as it relates to our industry.
* Ensure equipment is installed safely.
* Develop and audit a robust Asbestos Management plan for the business.
* Provide tailored industry relevant advice on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
* Act as ‘Gate keeper’ for internal events and off-site trips for onward referral for risk assessment.
* Procurement and supplier relationship management of suitable DSE assessment, Accident reporting and expectant mothers risk assessment online training and assessment tools.
* Follow-up pregnancy assessments where necessary in liaison with HR and colleagues line manager
* Provide framework and advice to ensure active control of all Contractors on site. This includes but is not limited to Specialist Surveyors / Engineers, CDMC, Fire, Water, Noise, Air and Water, Occupational Health etc.
* Support day to day Incident Controller and Emergency Response Team responsibilities including ongoing development and management of the Fire and Emergency Evacuation plan.
* Actively support Property services Colleagues by co-ordinating fire risk assessments and associated review activity.
* Act as focal point with relevant enforcing authority (regarding drills etc.)Ensure that you (and any direct reports) are meeting customers’ fair and reasonable expectations and provide fair outcomes. Question and challenge peers and managers where processes and procedures do not meet these expectations and any activity that does not place customers’ interests at the heart of how we do business.
* Complete training as mandated by the company and regulated by the FCA.
* Ensure that self and direct reports if in place achieve and demonstrate levels of competence required to fulfil job requirements

Experience

* Experience of working as part of a team in an in-house corporate role in a similar industry - Essential
* Pragmatic and creative with a ‘can do’ approach to delivery of safe methods of working - Essential
* Demonstrable ability to actively engage with stakeholders across the business to influence and develop proactive health and safety culture. – Essential
* Ability to demonstrate a track record of drafting and implementing Health &Safety strategy, policies and procedures. – Essential
* Specific knowledge of Fire Safety and related Building/Workplace Regulations. - Desirable
* Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and a strong customer focus. – Essential
* Collaborative working style and the ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships. – Essential

Qualifications

The operational health and Safety Advisor must hold a recognised, advanced qualification in health and safety and/or be a chartered member of the institute of occupational health (IOSH).
