Description: My clients in Cambridgeshire are looking for a Device Physics Scientist - Sensor Systems.

This role is commutable from Saffron Walden, Royston, Cambridge, Bedford, St. Neots, Huntingdon.

The successful candidate will develop organic electronic devices (OEDs), with a particular focus on light emitting diodes and electrochemical devices for a variety of sensor applications.
Responsibilities will include devising new fabrication processes and device architectures containing novel functional materials being developed in the team.

KEY RESULT AREAS:
- Design and execute experiments to evaluate the performance of organic light emitting materials and devices with emission in the visible and near infra-red regions.
- In conjunction with other team members, design and execute experiments to build electrochemical devices for the purpose of controlled chemical release.
- Design and execute experiments to correlate material and process parameters to device performances.
- Analyse results in order to understand the processes that limit performance with a focus on developing device structures to realise further enhancements.
- Support the work being conducted in the team on implementing technologies into functional demonstrators and prototypes. Maintain awareness of the importance of the complexity of processes and pro-actively propose adaptations to technologies accordingly.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of application and/or market needs and develop solutions that can address these needs.
- Actively participate in activities to generate and expand the company's Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio.
- Generate and develop proposals for new or enhanced applications and synergistic technologies to enhance the commercial attractiveness of company technologies.

MAIN ACTIVITIES:
- Characterise devices using relevant test equipment and develop novel techniques and systems to improve understanding and capabilities.
- Characterise new materials in devices produced by Chemists, external partners and collaborators using a wide range of standard and novel techniques.
- Fabricate devices in the cleanroom and laboratory facilities following standard procedures and working practices. Devise new procedures where appropriate.
- Analyse results and draw conclusions discussing them with line manager, writing reports to maintain up to date findings.
- Keep careful records of all laboratory work to ensure control and traceability.
- Pro-actively compile accurate & detailed reports of experimental results and propose directions for further development.
- Identify new approaches and architectures for novel organic electronic devices that will expand the IP portfolio and potentially contribute to future revenues. Generate and keep records of new Intellectual Property.
- Contribute to the building up of the working knowledge of competitors and application needs in order to direct technical developments.
- Develop and maintain equipment for characterisation of the properties of OEDs.
- Maintain an awareness of the requirements for commercialisation of new technologies, including the complexity of processing and issues involved in production.
- Prepare and deliver presentations when required.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
- PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science or related subject.
- Experience of conducting scientific research in the field of semiconductor, printed or organic device electronics.
- Experience of the deposition and characterisation of thin films via surface analysis and electrical characterisation techniques and correlating film properties to device performance is necessary.
- Experience of surface analysis methods such as optical, atomic force and/or scanning electron microscopy is essential.

Advantageous:
- Experience of device fabrication in cleanroom environments would be an advantage.
- Experience of aqueous electrochemistry would be an advantage.
