Job Title: Front-End Designer For Web & Mobile Applications
Location:Cambridge
Rate:£30K to £35K Per Year    Benefits: benefits & pension (12% non-contr.)
Description: Front-End UX Designer for Web & Mobile Applications - Global Ecology & Conservation - Circa 35k – Cambridge

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

Circa 35,000 plus benefits and superb pension (12% non-contributory!)

THE COMPANY:

This organisation is a world-leader in supplying environmental, ecological and conservationist information to governments and large corporations worldwide to enable them to make decisions that improve the environment rather than harm it.

The I.T. team within the company is producing web applications to save the planet, literally! They now need a front-end designer experienced in CSS and HTML in both web and mobile applications to help them.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

The essential experience required for this role is as follows:

• A relevant qualification
• A minimum of 2 years commercial experience as a front-end designer for both mobile and web applications with a strong focus on User Experience (UX)
• Willing and able to code in both HTML and CSS: Rapid prototyping with CSS and HTML is a part of the role.
• Experience working with a team of software engineers
• Experience with data visualization: We mean taking complex data and converting it into very simple, elegant visualization, for example charts, maps, graphs, etc.
• Experience in the Wireframing of web and mobile applications.
• Experience in iterative design working with a development team
• Experience of liaising with project leads
• A demonstrable portfolio we can view! Where can we have a look at your work? Are you on Dribbble? Do you have a Github?

Please note the above attributes are essential – you require all of the above to be eligible for this role.

Desirable, but not essential, is previous experience working with large geospatial datasets.

THE ROLE:
Your main task here is to create “beautiful usable” designs that are “pixel perfect”.
You’d typically work closely with the Business Analyst to ascertain requirements and then build and test wireframes.
The visual design is done either using graphics software such as Photoshop, or building directly into HTML or CSS.
The I.T. team here is, quite genuinely, building software which is trying to save the environment. They are building software to enable governments to be able to ascertain that if they make a change, for example turn a piece of land in to agriculture, then it will have massive implications on the environment, economy, human health, poverty etc. They’re building the software that makes it easy for governments to make the right choices when it comes to such actions.

Your objective in this job is as high-level as that: You are required to build software that makes it easier for governments to decide on improving their environment rather than making it worse.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

This is a place that is only suitable for those that are motivated by wanting to do important work, work that’s likely to have a real impact on the world, as opposed to just wanting a high pay cheque at the end of the month. Could that be you? If so, read on!

This is a design role in which you’re trying to change people’s perception of the world, rather than just trying to make people buy something. The variety here is huge: You’ll be working on multiple products, some very large and seen by every country in the world and some small ones used only by a hand full of scientists!

The software and the tools they use are at the cutting edge of new technology. Additionally, the team works together in interesting locations abroad three or four times a year.

The hiring manager here opined as follows:

“We build software which everyone can see and we’re trying to build software which fundamentally changes the way human society behaves, the way the planet is run. There are not many other jobs in software development where the goal is that high and the challenges are that big.”

Yes, you could probably earn more money in a bank, but here you have the personal satisfaction of being able to build pieces of software that fundamentally change society.
