Advanced Studies & Data Processing Group Leader
Our Client has a new position within their Central Engineering for an Advanced Studies & Data Processing Group Leader. The job role is required to develop a new Section/Group within the department that focuses on R&D (both internal & externally funded) & develops greater collaboration with the Business Unit System Architects in order to enhance support for existing and future business opportunities. The Central Engineering technical unit for Data Processing, On-Board Software & Dependability comprises departments in UK, France and Germany. The function of the technical unit is to provide a central competence that meets the evolving need of the business, for satellite platforms, payloads and equipment. The UK department is now in a position to further develop & strengthen its activities related to Advanced Studies and Data Processing in order to efficiently support the project teams and to develop opportunities for further business. There will be a focus on R&D (internal & externally funded), & developing greater collaboration with the business Unit System Architects (for example in the domains of Autonomous systems, formation flying and robotics). The role encompasses a predominantly technical bias, but team leadership/management element will be required in order to drive and develop a small team (typically up to 5 people). As part of the UK Central Engineering Department, the successful candidate is expected to:- Support the development of the Advanced Studies & Data Processing Group in the UK. Develop the group competencies in Autonomous needs for the OBSW & Data Processing systems such as Rovers, Formation flying, robotics or vision-based systems, or other needs as identified as key to future business needs. Facilitate the transfer of knowledge & expertise into the UK department via the Advanced Studies & Data Processing department based in Central engineering. Drive the technical communications to the business unit project teams regarding the technical support that can be provided and opportunities that can be developed. Participate to the implementation of trans-national harmonisation of tools, methods & processes. Improve System Co-engineering tools & methodologies to ensure effective transition from the System level activities to the OBSW Development and V&V activities Follow & participate in conferences & seminars that are related to the technical objectives of the group. Support the recruitment of engineering staff (in line with the workload need). Technically guide, train & mentor existing staff & new recruits. Participate in proposal bids as required. Manage their time and section budgets in accordance with project and departmental requirements. Formally report on progress, opportunities & risk. Conduct team performance & development reviews/appraisals. Qualifications and/or Skills Essential: Engineering honours degree in relevant Engineering subject Proven experience in the OBSW development, Data Processing, R&D, or similar domain Excellent communication, written & oral (fluency in English), organisation & presentation skills Rigorous ability to independently (& in coordination with team) analyse / understand complex problems Effective at working in a multi disciplinary team Drive and commitment to achieve for business needs and self – high willingness to succeed Results oriented Able to work to challenging timescales Strives for team & individual goals Able to work with minimum supervision Able to effectively manage, guide & technically coach engineering team High quality ethic and attention to detail Proactive approach Openness, honesty and flexibility Previous Experience Essential: Excellent knowledge of satellite system software needs Excellent understanding of Data Processing technical needs of satellite system Excellent knowledge on real time software development Architectural design skills (using appropriate tools/methodologies) - hardware/software partitioning Excellent UML, or System design tools Excellent requirements capture and analysis (expertise with associated tools) Excellent Team leadership skills Desirable: Working knowledge of ECSS standards for OBSW & DP development Use of requirements capture tools (e.g. DOORS). Data transport protocols (e.g. CCSDS), MIL-STD 1553B and/or spacewire standards, protocols & implementation Experience in working with European colleagues The successful Candidate should also have a proven ability in some or all of the following areas:- Strong technical (Software, Data processing, System) engineering skills Strong ability to network and develop ideas & strategies that are aligned with business objectives. Creativity & innovation. Ability to develop & defend ideas that are in-line with business objectives. Pro-active in capturing & disseminating relevant technical information (internal & external sources). Open-minded thinking outside of the box. Strong communication skills (oral, written, presentation). Successful candidates will be required to be security cleared prior to appointment. |
