Job Title: Operations Manager
Job Description: Our Client manages a large food distribution contract from a modern multi-temperature distribution centre located in Kabul, Afghanistan on behalf of one of the countries who is participating in ISAF, the multi-national peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.

They are currently seeking an accomplished Operations Manager for this distribution centre. This is a senior operations management role, broad in scope, running a cost effective food warehousing and distribution operation.

Reporting into the Depot General Manager and deputizing for them in their absence the primary objective of the role is to ensure that all operational departments complete their assigned tasks in line with company operating procedures, maintaining security of all company stock and assets, and individual job responsibilities in order to deliver a first class service to customers.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day running of the distribution centre and will be responsible for all warehouse, inventory, administration and transport activities.

Your responsibilities will also include quality of service to the customer, staff recruitment and retention, health and safety and cost control.

You will monitor and review workplace practices to ensure compliance with SOP`s, OH & S and provide recommendations for improvement to senior management. You will guide and motivate line managers to achieve set objectives and will ensure optimum staff levels inclusive of hiring, ongoing training and development of all operational staff in conjunction with the DGM.

You will manage and ensure all Depot equipment and infrastructure is maintained to a standard that ensures optimum performance.

You will ensure all new employees receive a complete and formal induction and ensure that Warehouse and Transport staff are compliant with HACCP and Quality Assurance principles.

You will ensure all non-conformances are reported to the DGM immediately and a formal report including supporting documentation is promptly written to minimize the company`s risk.
You will monitor operational financial performance (related to overhead costs, staffing) and will also monitor and report performance of all site service providers.

You will develop, implement and manage new systems whose impact is limited to the logistic and operational effort and will project manage related to the development, management of agreed logistic infrastructure plans and their costs.

Finally you will maintain appropriate contact and develop good relations with applicable personnel in the client Government Departments and other industry organizations that can influence and impact upon the operation.

As in any successful management position, the development and motivation of the team around you is essential, as is the ongoing strengthening of customer relationships.

Knowledge and Skills:

To meet this unique challenge, you will ideally be an ambitious operations professional with your warehousing, transport and inventory management experience ideally gained in an fmcg environment. With outstanding leadership ability and a strong customer focus, you will have the confidence to win credibility and make an immediate contribution.


You should be familiar with computer based stock and WMS systems (ideally Exceed) with RF screening experience and be an experienced PC user familiar with MS Office, e mail and the Internet.

Experience of MRP and knowledge of contemporary ERP systems such as JDE, SAP is desirable.

In addition you should have a working knowledge of HACCAP and ISO 9000 standards.

A military background would be very useful.

You should possess excellent communication skills in English and ideally one other language and be able to adapt to rapid changes in a positive manner and work to tight deadlines.

Superb inter-personal skills and instant credibility are essential as you will be inter-facing with a number of people from different backgrounds, nationalities and religions.

Finally you should possess a Drivers Licence.

This is an outstanding challenge for an accomplished Operations Manager looking for something different. Whilst our Clients operation is somewhat unique they are in it for the long term and are looking for a minimum of 18 to 24 months commitment.

The basic salary is paid in US Dollars and is tax free for an Ex-Patriate employee. In addition there is a profit share bonus payable which is paid annually and is also paid in US Dollars and tax free for an Ex-Patriate employee.

Accommodation, laundry, local transport, health insurance and meals are provided free. In addition employees have the use of a phone to call family and friends and the internet for e-mails etc.

Western Ex-Patriate employees will receive 63 days annual leave per year and the working rota is approx 14 weeks on, 3.5 weeks off.

Western Ex-Patriate employees will receive 3 paid return economy flights per year and Mobilization
